Creating a celebration that was fun and full of unforgettable memories was high on the wedding planning checklist for Tamara Rutherford and Dylan Foster.
When guests arrived for the ceremony they were greeted with refreshing beer and wine – perfect for the hot summer day and setting the tone for the party-like atmosphere.
“We just wanted our wedding to be fun! We really wanted everyone who made the effort to come to feel included and to show them how much we appreciated them all being there,” Tamara said.
A witty speech-turned-rap by the bride’s sister Tayla continued the theme at the reception, surprising the loved-up couple who had meticulously planned every other element of the day.
“I saw a video on Facebook of a bridesmaid doing a rap at a wedding, so I tagged my bridesmaids and told them they better start practising,” Tamara said.
“What was a joke on my part ended up being a highlight of the speeches, even the DJ was in on it. It was very clever and entertaining, we loved it!”
After traditionalist Dylan proposed to Tamara, surrounded by a sea of candles and after asking her father’s permission, the bride-to-be set about bringing her wedding day vision to life.
“Don’t listen to people when they say not to put too much effort into the small details as no-one notices them, because I had lots of small details – personalised reservation signs for family and personalised water bottles at the ceremony – and to this day people still comment on all those things and how beautiful they were,” Tamara said.
“Having said that, try not to stress too much as it all comes together on the day and if things don’t go to plan it doesn’t matter.”
With her mother and bridesmaids along for advice, Tamara tried on upwards of 15 dresses in Michele’s Bridal & Formal Wear before eventually falling in love with the total opposite of what she had envisioned.
“When we went in, Michelle told us all to pick a few dresses for me to try on and two of my bridesmaids chose one that I thought was the most disgusting dress I’d seen,” Tamara said.
“They put it back on the rack and then Michelle, who was unaware of what had happened, pulled it off the rack again and said to try it on ‘just for her’.
“I did, and I just loved it, instantly.”
Amidst the fun and laughter, the ceremony and reception had just the right amount of sentiment, with people special to the couple driving the bridal cars, doing readings, acting as MC and having Dylan’s gorgeous daughter Aylah as flowergirl.
“One of the best parts of the day for us was to sit back with each other and just take it all in,” Tamara said.
