A sporting romance

By Bride and Groom 12 November 2019

The timing of Hannah Gould and Sam Johnston’s wedding was dictated by the Australian sporting calendar but that meant it also fitted in with Sam’s dream to play cricket in England.

There can’t be many couples whose honeymoon plans incorporate a season of cricket, but it made perfect sense for Hannah and Sam.

Having arranged their wedding date around the end of the cricket season in Australia it meant that when the opportunity for Sam to play for Abbotskerswell in Devon came up everything fitted together perfectly and the English cricket season became a five month honeymoon.

Hannah and Sam had known each other since they were in nappies, as their mothers used to play sport together.

Sam’s family moved away from the area but when he returned he began playing football at Hannah’s local club.

The couple were friends for some time before friendship turned to romance.

When it came to planning their wedding the couple wanted a relaxed country wedding so being married at Hannah’s family farm in Wedderburn was an obvious choice for them.

Hannah and her father spent weeks clearing out a machinery shed which was transformed into a reception venue with wooden boxes and tables and decorated with drapery, greenery chandeliers, fairy lights and native flowers.

Looking for a suitable location for the ceremony the couple and their parents drove around the farm trying to find somewhere with just the right feel.

At about the same time of day as the ceremony would be held they found themselves under a beautiful old redgum with dappled sunlight coming through its canopy and knew that they had found the ideal spot.

The couple’s eighteen-month-old daughter, Hadley, was their flower girl, with a dress modelled on Hannah’s wedding gown while the bridesmaids wore pale dusty pink.

Hannah said that her advice to brides is no to stress because no-one else knows what didn’t work or wasn’t displayed.

She said that she and Sam loved having so many of their friends and family together to celebrate a beautiful day in a beautiful setting.
