Majestic mountain wedding

By Bride and Groom 03 July 2019

Naomi Hitchcock and Joel Thomas let the majestic views of the high-country mountains take centre stage and opted to make the most of their simple touches, beautiful table greenery, flat shoes and an unplugged wedding.

Romance is in the air

When Naomi and Joel saw that there was an option to book a helicopter ride to the scenic Craig’s Hut on Mt Stirling for their wedding photographs – they knew it was too much of a “happy coincidence” to ignore.

That’s because Joel’s epic proposal in 2016 involved taking Naomi on a scenic helicopter while they were holidaying on the Gold Coast and flying over a deserted island where the words “Marry me Naomi” were written in the sand below.

“I think helicopters are our thing now, we’ll have to organise a helicopter ride to celebrate the birth of our first child or something.”

Go flat for comfort

For Naomi heels versus comfort was a no-contest decision.

“I knew I’d be walking up mountains and going in a helicopter when we got our photographs done," she said.

“It was the best choice I could have made. We danced all night and I was so comfortable, and the dress was long so no-one even knew anyway.”

Taking professional advice

Naomi’s photographer told her she would not get amazing wedding photos if she was too worried about keeping dress clean – so she didn’t.

“It had rained all morning before the wedding and I was climbing in and out of the helicopter, walking up and down the mountain, and I didn’t focus on the dress once and now we have these amazing photos.”

Thoughtful touch

Naomi and Joel combined thank you with fun when they chose gifts for their flower girl and page boy.

“I know how restless kids get with all the speeches and I knew there wouldn’t be any other kids at the wedding so I wanted to give them some special things so they could have some fun too," she said.

“They loved it, they thought it was like Christmas.”

Unplugged emotion

Naomi and Joel didn’t just opt for an unplugged ceremony, they asked guests to avoid posting any solo photos of the duo so the newlyweds could choose the perfect photo to mark the event online.
