Elegance reigns supreme

By Bride and Groom 18 April 2019

A series of mishaps almost derailed Nathan Whitten’s romantic marriage proposal, but that didn’t deter him from asking the question and Brittany James answering with a resounding ‘yes’.

On a hot summer night shortly before Christmas the annual family bike ride to look at Christmas lights around Echuca proved even more eventful than Nathan had planned, with several riders coming off their bikes.

“We headed off to the Moama wharf and Nath wanted to get a family photo. I didn’t think anything of it and next minute he is down on one knee asking me to marry him. Of course I said yes straight away, wearing a push bike helmet and jumping around,” Brittany said.

Nathan presented his bride-to-be with a stunning square-cut diamond, white gold set ring that he had secretly made by Benjamin’s Jewellers in Little Collins St, the same jeweller that made his mother and grandmother’s engagement rings.

Fortunately the wedding planning went more smoothly, with the couple tying the knot on a glorious early autumn day at Nathan’s family home in Echuca.

An aisle, edged with rose petals from Nathan’s nan’s garden, was the perfect entrance for the bride and her dad, who arrived for the lakeside ceremony in a green Zephyr belonging to the groom’s father.

“Our wedding theme was all about creating a fun-filled day with our beautiful family and friends,” Brittany said.

Chilled champagne was flowing as guests arrived for the ceremony and simple party food such as party pies, cocktail frankfurts and an amazing lolly bar, designed by the bride’s mum, added to the fun.

“We had plenty of games, croquet, bocce, giant Jenga and quoits to entertain our guests, they were having so much fun they didn’t want to leave for the reception in town,” Brittany said.

Elegance and romance were hallmarks of the reception space at Radcliffe’s, Echuca with fairy lights intertwined with vines draped from the ceiling and round tables topped with tall flower-filled vases creating a sense of opulence.

“Our entrance to the wedding reception was absolutely next level. Nath had organised for a famous voice-over guy for supercross in America to record our names and introduce us as the bridal party,” Brittany said.

“We came in along with the most insane music that had our guests lift the roof off with their cheers and screams. It really set the mood for a fun party atmosphere.

“The band we had played amazing music and everyone danced the night away, especially my beautiful niece Scarlett.”
